Lemelson Foundation
Category: Computers & Technology
DescriptionThe Foundation’s Lemelson-MIT Technology Program created the InvenTeam Initiative to provide high school students in the United States with the opportunity to cultivate their creativity and experience opportunities for inventing. InvenTeam projects span many fields from assistive devices to environmental technologies and consumer goods. Applicants are encouraged to consider the needs of the world’s poorest people (those earning less than $2 per day) when considering ideas. A panel of inventors, educators, InvenTeam student alumni as well as MIT faculty, staff, and alumni reviews the applications. Diversity is considered among school settings, demographics, and projects. Up to 35 finalists are selected from the initial applications to continue to the next step, the Excite Awards and EurekaFest, a multi-day celebration at MIT. Finalists who’ve received the Excite Awards, meet current InvenTeams, see their inventions, and attend invention workshops. During this time they also submit their final InvenTeam grant application. Science, math, and technology teachers at public, private, and vocational high schools are eligible to apply. The deadline is for early feedback on projects. The initial application deadline is April 22, 2011. Additional information and details about the composition of the teams can be found on the Web site.
