J-lab: The Institute For Interactive Journalism

Category

: Computers & Technology

Description

The Institute’s New Voices project funds participatory news ventures in defined communities. Grant projects must foster an open exchange of journalistically sound information, serve a defined community, and develop a publicly accessible, regularly updated Web site to showcase their efforts. Projects also must be interactive and sustainable. Only start-up news initiatives are eligible to receive funding. Eligible applicants include nonprofits and educational institutions, community groups, public broadcasters, independent media, colleges and universities, and individuals working under the sponsorship of a nonprofit. Grants are awarded for print and electronic news initiatives, including online, cable, broadcast, satellite, and mobile efforts. The Institute plans on funding eight projects in 2010. Of the eight, at least three are targeted for news initiatives in the 26 communities where John S. and James L. Knight once owned newspapers. Grantees may receive up to $25,000 each in funds. The first year grant is $17,000. An additional $8,000 in matching funds may be awarded during the second year. Additional information including an online application can be found on the Web site.
