New Voices
Category: Social Change
DescriptionNew Voices is a pioneering program to seed innovative community news ventures in the United States. Through 2008 the Program is helping to fund the start-up of 40 micro-local news projects with $12,000 grants; support them with an educational Web site; and help foster their sustainability through $5,000 matching grants. The University of Maryland’s J-Lab is administering the program, which is supported by a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. J-Lab, the Institute for Interactive Journalism in the Philip Merrill College of Journalism, helps news organizations and citizens use new information ideas and innovative computer technologies to develop new ways for people to engage in critical public policy issues. Spotlighting dynamic news experiences, J-Lab helps to develop interactive news ideas that educate people about public affairs and invite their participation.
