DescriptionThe Federation’s International Smart Gear Competition brings together the fishing industry, research institutes, universities, and government to inspire and reward practical, innovative fishing gear designs that reduce bycatch. Bycatch is defined as the accidental catch and related deaths of sea turtles, birds, marine mammals, cetaceans, and non-target fish species in longlines and nets. Specific information and entry details are available on the Web site. The grand prize is $30,000, of which $10,000 will be disbursed in the form of a grant from WWF to fund activities such as testing and marketing, that will increase the likelihood that the idea will become widely available.
