Description

The Fund, named for the late LIFE Magazine photographer, seeks to honor and support documentary photographers. The Fund offers three grants: the W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography, the W. Eugene Smith Grant for Student Photographers, and the Howard Chapnick Grant. The Humanistic Photography grant of $35,000 is presented annually to a photographer whose past work and proposed project follows the tradition of Smith’s concerned photography and dedicated compassion. The Student Photography Grant of $4,000 is designed for current students. The Chapnick grant of $5,000 will be awarded to an individual who is not a photographer but instead works in a related field that reinforces the impact of photojournalism, for example, research, education, photo editing. Additional details about each of the grant programs and application instructions can be found on the Web site.
