The Big Read

Category

: Arts & Culture

Description

The Program, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services, seeks to revitalize literature’s role in popular culture. A secondary goal is to introduce literature’s transformative power into the lives of ordinary Americans. The Program aims to engage libraries and other community and school partners to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment. Participating organizations will choose a book from the Program’s list and produce a highly participatory communitywide read with innovative and diverse programming between January 2007 and June 2007. A successful communitywide read will last one month and should promote active participation, involve the local library in communities where there is one, and occur in a variety of locations. The Program was created by the NEA in cooperation with Arts Midwest. Applications are submitted online.
