Investigative Fund
Category: Democracy & Government
DescriptionThe Fund is a program of the Nation Institute, a nonprofit media center dedicated to strengthening the independent press and advancing social justice and civil rights. Its objective is to produce high-impact investigative reporting that holds the powerful accountable, brings underreported stories to light, cultivates diverse journalist talent, and creates a home for independent journalism that serves the public. The Fund’s Wayne Barrett Investigative Fund is named for Barrett who spent 40 years at the Village Voice newspaper in New York. Projects that build on Barrett’s previous reporting are particularly encouraged including politics and corruption in New York City and nationally. Proposals will be assessed on the following criteria: originality, feasibility, potential for impact, and whether the project builds on Barrett’s reporting legacy. Awards for each investigative project will range between $5,000 and $15,000 with the objective of underwriting travel, document fees, and compensation for reporting time, as needed. Additional information can be found on the Web site.
