Middle East Partnership Initiative

Category

: International

Description

The Initiative seeks to enhance the role that private and nongovernmental sectors play in influencing policy decisions and ensuring that laws, policies, regulations, and practices are transparent and responsive to the needs of business and labor. MEPI works in 18 countries and territories and has contributed over $600 million to more than 1,000 projects since its inception in 2002. Each year, the Initiative provides a significant number of local grants directly to local organizations based in the Middle East and North Africa (Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, West Bank/Gaza, and/or Yemen). These organizations include members of civil society, including NGOs, civic groups, reform networks, and academic institutions that are committed to supporting democratic values and the active participation of all individuals in social, political, and economic life. Funding is available for projects that protect and advance civil liberties, especially political and civic rights, empower women and youth, strengthen the rule of law, develop independent and pluralistic media, foster economic opportunity and economic reform, and promote an educated, active, and informed citizenry. Applications are accepted in English, Arabic, and French. Links to application information can be found on the Web site.
