The Herb Block Foundation

Category

: Democracy & Government

Description

The Foundation, named for the editorial cartoonist, Herb Block, awards grants in three areas: defending basic freedoms, pathways out of poverty, and encouraging citizen involvement. Defending Basic Freedoms grants safeguard the basic freedoms guaranteed in our Bill of Rights, and to help eliminate all forms of prejudice and discrimination and to assist government agencies to be more accountable to the public. Pathways Out of Poverty grants focus on helping needy young people and adults gain a quality education. Encouraging Citizen Involvement grants seek to help ensure a responsible, responsive democratic government through citizen involvement. Both Defending Basic Freedoms and Encouraging Citizen Involvement are open to organizations across the United States. Applicants for the Pathways Out of Poverty grants must be located in and/or provide services in the greater Washington, DC region, which the Foundation defines as the District of Columbia, the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, and the city of Alexandria in Virginia; and Montgomery and Prince Georges counties in Maryland. The deadline is for the Foundation’s Encouraging Citizen Involvement grants. Additional information can be found on the Web site.
