Description

The Foundations announce a new initiative to support college debate programs around the world. Global Debates, a $20 million funding initiative seeks to engage young people in policy issues critical to their futures. Part of the Foundations’ Youth Initiative, the Program will provide up to three years of funding to colleges, universities, and other educational institutions to integrate debate across disciplines. The International Debate Education Association will implement the programs and help the Foundations identify and provide support to grantees. Priority will be given to institutions that have either very small debate programs or none at all. Grants will also be made to institutions seeking to promote public debates within the broader communities they serve and to increase the capacity of young people from marginalized communities to engage in debates concerning controversial issues affecting their lives. Funding will be awarded in the following four areas: debate sponsored by departments and schools within colleges and universities; debate organized by consortia of colleges and universities; debate in student clubs and societies; and supporting debate events. Program details and application instructions can be found on the Web site.
