Firedoll Foundation

: General

Description

Named for their two cats, Fireworks and Dolly, the private family Foundation was founded by Sandor and Faye Straus, two “unrepentant liberals” from the 1960s looking for ways to be part of the solution rather than the problem. Grantmaking is focused on the following areas: community development and entrepreneurship, immigrant issues and human rights, environmental conservation, the peace process in the Middle East, and services for survivors of traumatic brain injury. Community development and entrepreneurship grants fill the gap left by a lack of government funding. Grantmaking for this program is concentrated on the Alameda and Contra Costa counties of the San Francisco Bay area with a focus on the development of self-sufficiency through entrepreneurship and community services. Immigrant issues and human rights grants support projects that provide alternatives to detention, advocate on behalf of detained immigrants, and facilitate their successful integration into American society. Grants are made to human rights projects on behalf of vulnerable populations whose basic rights are being sacrificed by repressive governmental or religious policies or for the sake of global economic interests. Environmental conservation grants support a variety of approaches to preserving the environment including legal action, scientific inquiry, legislative advocacy, and direct action. Grants for this program are made in Northern California. The Peace Process in the Middle East grants funds organizations, which agree that the people of Palestine and Israel have the right to share their ancient homeland in peace and security. The funding focus for this program is on humanitarian assistance, economic development, and support of civil society in the West Bank and Gaza; support to organizations defending the internationally recognized human rights of the Palestinians living under occupation; and support of organizations working to end the occupation. Services for traumatic brain injury (TBI) grants support research and programs to improve emergency room diagnoses and protocols for the treatment of TBI. The Foundation supports community-based, post-acute programs for TBI survivors primarily in California. Letters of inquiry are requested for new applicants. Additional information can be found on the Web site.
