Description

The Organization’s Marine Debris Program supports locally driven, community-based marine debris prevention and removal projects that benefit coastal habitat, waterways, NOAA trust resources, and wildlife including migratory fish. Marine debris includes any material that is disposed of or abandoned in the marine environment ranging from a plastic bottle thrown on the beach, to a ship that has been abandoned on a sand bar, or fishing gear trapped under the sea. Marine debris can scour, break, smother, and otherwise damage important marine habitat, such as coral reefs. The Program aims to foster collaboration among diverse entities and groups such as public and nonprofit organizations, citizen and watershed groups, anglers, boaters, industry, corporations and businesses, youth conservation corps, students, landowners, academics, and local, state, and federal government agencies to cooperatively implement safe, impactful and cost-effective marine debris removal projects. Additional information can be found on the Web site.
