Description

Nominations are now open for the 2011 Purpose Prize that honors older social innovators. Sponsored by Civic Ventures, the prize provides five awards of $100,000 and five awards of $50,000 to people over the age of 60 who are working to address society’s biggest challenges. The Prize represents the only large-scale investment in social innovators in the second half of life. Nominations and self-nominations are accepted through the annual deadline. Nominees must be at least 60 years old by the deadline of March 10, 2011 and must be a legal resident of the United States (including the U.S. territories). Nominees should have initiated important innovations, in a new or ongoing organization, in an encore career. “Encore careers” are those that combine personal meaning and social impact with continued work in the second half of life. Elected officials are not eligible to apply. Individuals working for faith-based service organizations that have a broader social mission may apply but the purpose of their project cannot be strictly religious or sectarian. Winners and a larger group of Purpose Prize candidates (called the Purpose Prize Fellows) will be invited to participate in a face-to-face meeting of a new network of social innovators, the Purpose Prize Innovation Summit. Additional information can be found on the Web site.
