Description

The Foundation’s mission is to help nurture and uplift people in need. The board is currently focusing its grantmaking on three areas: education, economic self-sufficiency, and health and independence. Education grants are targeted at primary, secondary, and higher education for those motivated individuals who are unable to obtain the benefits of quality education without assistance. Topics of interest in the economic self-sufficiency grant category include, but are not limited to, job training, encouragement and support of entrepreneurialism, mentoring, and micro-credit initiatives. Health and independence grants address medical and public health assistance for the elderly, the poor, the disadvantaged, and the disabled. The Foundation favors programs that address long-term solutions to problems as opposed to programs that just treat the symptoms. It puts added emphasis on programs and organizations that address the intersection of its various interests and encourages pilot initiatives that test new program models. Grantee organizations have effective and dynamic personnel, passionate leadership, a bias against bureaucracy, prudent management and governance practices, a commitment to results, and overall assessment of the program’s impact. The Foundation primarily provides grants to nonprofits in the northeastern United States and abroad, but occasionally may make grants in other regions of the country. Additional information can be found on the Web site.
