DescriptionUSDA’s Food and Nutrition Service has $5 million available for the Hunger-Free Communities grant competition. State and local governments, agencies providing social services, public health organizations, educational entities, and other private, nonprofit entities such as community-based or faith-based organizations, food banks, or other emergency feeding organizations are invited to apply. The grant’s purpose is to establish hunger-free communities and learn more about effective strategies to reduce hunger in the United States. There are two models of grants: planning and assessment grants and implementation grants. A community may apply for only one model as part of this grant solicitation. However, those communities receiving a planning and assessment grant may apply for an implementation grant in a future year if additional funds are made available to continue this program. These are collaborative grants and applicants are required to partner with one or more organizations in their community. They are also required to partner with Food Policy Councils or their functional equivalent at the local level or include the creation of a Food Policy Council as part of their application should one not serve their community. The maximum grant size is $100,000 and 100 grants are available. Additional information can be found on the Web site and applications are accepted through Grants.gov.
