Description

The Organization’s Purpose Prize honors older social innovators who are working to address society’s biggest challenges. Funded by grants from the Atlantic Philanthropies and The John Templeton Foundation, the Prize is awarded to those individuals age 60 and older who are improving society. Social entrepreneurs are defined as ambitious, mission driven, strategic, resourceful, and results oriented. Candidates must have initiated important innovations (in a new or ongoing organization) in the second half of their lives. This is not a prize awarded based on lifetime achievements. Candidates must work in a leadership capacity on an initiative or in an organization or institution (public, private, nonprofit, or for-profit) to address a major social problem in the United States or abroad. They must be effecting measurable change and have initiated the innovation for which they’re being nominated within the past 15 years with the promise of more creativity to come. Candidates must also be involved with projects that are not strictly religious or sectarian. Those working in faith-based settings must have a broader social mission. Nomination forms are available the Web site. Candidates may nominate themselves. Five prizes of $100,000 each are awarded annually; in addition, 10 $10,000 prizes are given to individuals who have demonstrated uncommon vision.
