Description

The Organization’s Purpose Prize rewards people over 60 who are addressing society’s biggest challenges. The Organization, a think tank and incubator, generates ideas and invents programs to help society achieve the greatest return on experience. The Prize, a three-year initiative, invests in older social innovators by recognizing outstanding achievements, creates a network of people wanting to use their retirement years for the greater good, and channels funds and assistance to these new pioneers. Five awards of $100,000 and five awards of $50,000 will be given to exceptional individuals who are channeling their creativity and talent to address critical social problems and the local, regional, national, or international level. The winners may be working in public, private, nonprofit, or for-profit organizations devoted to tackling the hardest challenges of our time: homelessness, social justice and human rights, violence, poverty and hunger, health, education, and the environment. Eligible candidates must be at least 60 years old by March 5, 2009. Nominees must be legal residents of the United States who have initiated important innovations in an encore career. Nomination forms and additional information is available on the Organization’s Web site. Funding for the Prize comes from The Atlantic Philanthropies and the John Templeton Foundation.
