National Endowment For The Arts
Category: Arts & Culture
DescriptionAn initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts, the Big Read program is designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. Presented in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services in cooperation with Arts Midwest, the Program brings together partners across the United States to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment. The Program is accepting applications to conduct month-long, communitywide reads between September 2009 and June 2010. Organizations selected to participate will receive a matching grant ranging from $2,000 to $20,000, financial support to attend an orientation meeting, educational and promotional materials, and an Organizer’s Guide. In addition, the award includes the inclusion of the organization and its activities on the Big Read Web site, and the prestige of participating in a highly visible national initiative. Approximately 400 organizations of varying sizes will be selected for this cycle. Eligible applicants include literary centers, libraries, museums, colleges and universities, art centers, historical societies, arts councils, tribal governments, humanities councils, literary festivals, and arts organizations. Applicant organizations must partner with a library if the applicant organization itself is not one and must select one of the 27 available book titles or one of three available poetry books as their reading initiative. Consortiums are encouraged to apply. Additional information is available on the Web site.
