Average Grant: $2,000 to $50,000
Description:

The Foundation seeks to advance the human experience while ensuring the well-being of the earth. Founded by the late Elizabeth Beinecke and William Beinecke, former president and retired chairman of the Sperry and Hutchinson Company, the Foundation awards grants in four areas.

# Environment
In this category, the Foundation focuses its mission on the coastal waters and oceans in the southern New England region, stretching from Cape Code to the Hudson Canyon. It funds advocacy and policy reform opportunities in order to improve water quality, advance marine conservation, and restore coastal habitats. With its environmental grantmaking, the Foundation is interested in leveraging relationships between environmental advocates and policymakers.

# Nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation
Here, the Foundation seeks to further nuclear arms control and ultimately abolish nuclear weapons through support for policy analysis, research, and advocacy. The program will focus its fun ding to advance support for multilateral agreements and the use of existing international institutions created to limit the proliferation of nuclear weapons.

# Reproductive health and justice
The Foundation funds advocacy to ensure that all women have access to the full range of quality reproductive and sexual health services and that these services are fully integrated in the implementation of health care reform, namely the Affordable Care Act.

# Youth justice
In this category, the Foundation seeks to secure transformational reforms for young people whose lives intersect with New York’s youth and adult justice system. Funding is targeted at two areas: advocacy that promotes policies and practices that are fair, effective, and appropriate for youth and projects that promote community-based models in New York that present non-incarceration strategies. Of particular interest are organizations that place directly affected individuals at the center.

The Foundation is also interested in work that helps the general public and decision-makers reframe the “justice thinking” to include community development and positive youth development principles.

It also supports the philanthropic interests and activities of the Beinecke family members through sponsored grants in the areas of arts and culture, environmental conservation, civic affairs, social services, and educational institutions. The Foundation’s grants support activities in the United States. While many of these activities are national in scope, there is a particular regional focus on the states of New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. Additional information can be found on the Web site.

TIP: A BREW WITH A BANG!

Justin and Emily Carabello, the owners of Carabello Roasting Works and Craft Coffee Bar in Newport, Ky., just over the river from Cincinnati, Ohio, know how to brew a good cup of coffee. But they also had a vision for a sustainable product that would reinvest their profits into coffee-growing communities throughout the world.

They created a philanthropic coffee roasting company that seeks to source coffee equitably and sell it in the United States while investing the profits in sustainable initiatives in coffee growing communities in the Third World. Currently, the philanthropic profits are being given to an orphanage in Nicaragua, a nonprofit ministry in Kenya, a Christian children’s advocacy ministry in Rwanda and a service provider for women and children in Kenya. They’re also using the coffee as a fund-raiser for several Cincinnati area nonprofits.

The company’s tag line, “coffee &compassion in tandem,” seems to appeal to the Millennial generation who seek out locally sourced goods and companies that do well by doing good for others.
