DescriptionWith its grantmaking, the Foundation has been advancing health and healthy communities to innovative programs and projects. It has two philanthropic focus areas: Health & Life Sciences Research and Local Giving. Grants in Health & Lifestyles support research that leads to the development of more effective treatments, and ultimately cures, for the world's most disruptive diseases such as diabetes (particularly Type 1) and macular degeneration and other retinal diseases. Local giving is targeted to groups located in Charlottesville VA that share the Foundation's vision of a thriving community, one in which culture can flourish and families can prosper. Local grantmaking has been awarded to organizations serving physical and mental health, providing educational and developmental opportunities for children, and promoting financial literacy.
