DescriptionThe Foundation was founded by two brothers who owned newspapers in various media markets across the country. The Foundation is a social investor that supports a more effective democracy. Grants fund free expression and journalism, arts and culture in community, research in areas of media and democracy and in the success of American cities and towns where the Knight brothers once published newspapers. The brothers published newspapers in Akron, Ohio; Detroit; South Florida (Bradenton, Tallahassee and Palm Beach County) and St. Paul, MN. In addition to those locations, nonprofits in Aberdeen, South Dakota; Biloxi, Mississippi, Boulder, Colorado; Columbia and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Columbus and Milledgeville, Georgia; Duluth, Minnesota, Fort Wayne and Gary, Indiana; Grand Forks, North Dakota; Lexington, Kentucky; Long Beach, California; State College, Pennsylvania; and Wichita, Kansas are eligible to apply.
