Description

This San Francisco-based family Foundation works with others to address social issues and their underlying causes. The Foundation supports leaders and organizations with the know-how and tenacity to take on tough problems which have no quick and easy answers. The Foundation awards grants in the following areas: Education, A Thriving Democracy, Just Communities, and Environment and the Basic Sciences. Education grants have supported free academic classes for 25,000 students in the San Francisco Public School District and an endowment at The Julliard School. Thriving Democracy grants seek to fulfill the promise of a secure democracy in which voting for every citizen in straight-forward; the rights of all are respected; freedom of expression is protected; extremism is treated with concern; and the press and artistic communities thrive. Just Communities grants support San Francisco Bay area organizations that help people live without fear of harm or abuse; ensure that their children are being cared for while they work; and provide protection against threats to their safety and wellbeing. Environment and the Basic Sciences grants seek to take care of the earth and oceans and make progress in the building blocks of science. The Foundation makes the majority of its grants in the San Francisco Bay area but on occasion made commitments in Chicago and the United Kingdom. Additional information can be found on the Web site.
