Description

The Endowment makes direct grants to hundreds of nongovernmental organizations worldwide working to advance democratic goals and strengthen democratic institutions. The Endowment funds only nongovernmental organizations, which may include civic organizations, associations, independent media, and other similar organizations. Priority is given to organizations working in diverse environments including newly established democracies, semi-authoritarian countries, highly repressive societies, and countries undergoing democratic transitions. Topics of interest include promoting and defending human rights and the rule of law; promoting accountability and transparency, strengthening civil society organizations, and promoting civic education. Also of interest are programs that support freedom of information and independent media, strengthen democratic ideas and values, strengthen democratic political processes and institutions, promoting freedom of association and supporting democratic conflict resolution in addition to strengthening a broad-based market economy.
