The Trust, a private foundation established by William Wikoff Smith, is focused on areas involving basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter; supplementing higher education scholarship programs; and basic medical research primarily in heart disease, cancer, and AIDS. Food, clothing, and shelter grants are awarded to recipients under age 18 (including needy families with dependent children) or the elderly age 60 or above. Proposals for grants to colleges and universities are by invitation only. The Foundation also awards Philadelphia Maritime grants to support nonprofits in the Philadelphia, Delaware River area for maritime educational activities designed to preserve historic maritime resources or increase public awareness or develop an appreciation for the maritime heritage of Philadelphia, or teach basic or advanced maritime skills. With few exceptions, grants are limited to organizations within Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties as well as the city of Camden, New Jersey.
