Description

The Foundation was established in New York in 1948 by Helen and Frank Altschul. It advances its mission through two programs: Environment and Human Rights. The Environment Program provides support to environmental programs in the United States and in Latin America. The Program funds initiatives that advance biodiversity conservation and sustainable community development, with a specific focus on the Mesoamerican region. The Environment Program also seeks out initiatives, primarily in the United States, that tackle some of the today's biggest environmental challenges, including corporate and consumer practices, climate change, and waste. The Foundation supports organizations working on the following issues: Latin America Biodiversity Conservation, Corporate and Consumer Practices, Innovative Solutions, and Movement Building. From the Foundation's perspective Human Rights organizations are those that see human rights as universal, inalienable, indivisible, and interdependent. Internationally, the Foundation funds organizations that support human rights defenders at risk in Mesoamerica. Domestically, the Foundation awards grants in two areas: organizations challenging the undue influence of moneyed interests in the U.S. political system and gender rights including LGBT rights, racial justice, and reproductive justice. While the Foundation does not accept any unsolicited request for support from organizations it does not currently fund, the Foundation is committed to its primary fields of interest and is eager to hear news from organizations working in those areas. Additional information can be found on the Web site.
