Description

Created by the fans of singer Jimmy Buffett, the Organization targets its grantmaking on improving the quality of life for people and empowering individuals to make positive changes in their communities. It makes grants to progressive, community-based, nonprofits that address the root causes of social and environmental problems. Grants are awarded in three areas: children and families, the environment, and disenfranchised groups. Children and family grants are awarded to programs concerned with the health, education, and protection of children and their families. Of interest are those that foster self-esteem and self-sufficiency and those that teach nonviolence, tolerance, and creative problem solving. Environmental grants are awarded to programs that promote environmental awareness and those that teach people methods of conservation, protection, and the responsible use of natural resources. Grants to disenfranchised groups are awarded to programs and projects that help people overcome social or economic barriers to education or employment. Also of interest are programs that promote individual empowerment to self-sufficiency and provide opportunities for personal growth and those that demonstrate human equality and encourage people to cross boundaries to help others. Additional information including information on a two-stage application process can be found on the Web site.
