Herb Block Foundation

Category

: Democracy & Government

Description

Created by the editorial cartoonist, Herb Block, the Foundation focuses its grantmaking on groups that work to defend the nation’s basic freedoms. The Foundation funds programs and projects in three areas: Pathways Out of Poverty, Defending Basic Freedoms, and Encouraging Citizen Involvement. Pathways Out of Poverty grants focuses on supporting programs that help needy young people and adults get a quality education. Of interest are programs that improve student achievement and healthy development of young people of middle school age and above; those that are designed to increase high school graduation rates; and those that provide literacy education, GED preparation, and offer vocational training and job placement. Encouraging Citizen Involvement grants help ensure a responsible, responsive democratic government through citizen involvement. Proposals may focus on citizen education or greater voter participation in the electoral process. The Foundation also provides higher educational opportunities through scholarships promoting editorial cartooning. The Foundation uses a two-step process for evaluating grant proposals. The first step is a letter of inquiry. Step two is an invited proposal. The deadline is for the Encouraging Citizen Involvement grants. Additional information is available on the Web site.
