Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired

Virginia Jacko is president & CEO of the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired, which helps adults acquire independent living skills and teens to successfully transition into adulthood. Virginia, who has been called a “blind visionary in a sighted world,” is one of only a handful of blind CEOs in the United States. Experiencing gradual vision loss while serving as Director of Financial Affairs at Purdue University, Virginia relocated to Miami to receive vocational rehabilitation training at the Miami Lighthouse. She was asked to join the Lighthouse Board of Directors, became its treasurer, and was subsequently appointed interim and permanent president & CEO of the Lighthouse. On her watch, the Lighthouse has significantly expanded and diversified its programming and more than doubled its financial contributions. Virginia’s many honors have included being named Business Woman of the Year in the Public Service/Nonprofit category by the South Florida Business Journal, and she is a trustee of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and of the American Printing House for the Blind, among other organizations.
