Class Description:

High-impact governing boards that make a real difference – setting clear strategic targets, resolving high-stakes issues, committing resources to major change initiatives – are one of the preeminent keys to nonprofit success in these challenging times. But no nonprofit board can go it alone in providing high-impact leadership. Governing is truly a team sport, and nonprofits that thrive and grow in today’s world are led by a cohesive “Strategic Governing Team” consisting of the board and its CEO. Therefore, building and maintaining a rock-solid board-CEO partnership that is close, positive, and enduring is a critical step toward the kind of high-impact governing capacity that the times demand.

The Building a Rock-Solid Partnership With Your Board Webinar will provide participants with detailed, practical, thoroughly-tested guidance for building the kind of close, positive, and productive board-CEO partnership that these changing, challenging times demand. There’s nothing theoretical about this webinar; nor is it about “touchy-feely” team building techniques. It is based on the real-life experience of many nonprofits that have succeeded in putting strong, enduring Strategic Governing Teams in place, and have, as a result, strengthened their capacity to thrive and grow in a challenging world. Special attention will be paid to the highly successful High-Impact Governing Initiative of the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

Participants In This Program Will:

  • Become familiar with the key elements of the High-Impact Governing Model that is at the heart of rock-solid board-CEO partnerships.

  • Learn how the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind Board and CEO applied the High-Impact Governing Model in transforming an already excellent governing board into an even stronger governing body.

  • Learn how to transform board members into strong owners of their governing work

  • Acquire practical ways to provide board members with ego satisfaction and to make their governing work easier and more enjoyable

Class Format:

This course is the recording of a live webinar and contains the slides and audio from the original presentation. Only a reasonably current version of FlashPlayer is needed to run this recording (most computers already have this installed).

Virginia Jacko, President & CEO
Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired

Virginia Jacko is president & CEO of the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired, which helps adults acquire independent living skills and teens to successfully transition into adulthood. Virginia, who has been called a “blind visionary in a sighted world,” is one of only a handful of blind CEOs in the United States. Experiencing gradual vision loss while serving as Director of Financial Affairs at Purdue University, Virginia relocated to Miami to receive vocational rehabilitation training at the Miami Lighthouse. She was asked to join the Lighthouse Board of Directors, became its treasurer, and was subsequently appointed interim and permanent president & CEO of the Lighthouse. On her watch, the Lighthouse has significantly expanded and diversified its programming and more than doubled its financial contributions. Virginia’s many honors have included being named Business Woman of the Year in the Public Service/Nonprofit category by the South Florida Business Journal, and she is a trustee of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and of the American Printing House for the Blind, among other organizations.
