Description

These Foundations are linked by common issue interests and boards of directors. Both of them are dedicated to preserving biodiversity, defending democracy, preventing the commodification of life, and protecting human and environmental health. The Foundations currently target their grantmaking in the following areas: economic globalization, food sovereignty, civil liberties, emerging technologies, and board initiated grants. Economic globalization grants balance the short-term efforts that oppose the NAFTA/WTO/FTAA trade regimes with long-term efforts to develop alternative economic models. It also supports efforts to establish law at the intersection of human rights and the environment. Food sovereignty grants are designed to promote seed saving, encourage soil building, and protect pollinating insects and animals. Of particular interest are those initiatives that are farmer-led and incorporate elements of traditional agriculture. Civil liberties grants focus on protecting the constitutionally guaranteed right to dissent and preserving an accountable, transparent government. Efforts to curb undue government surveillance powers and defend the due process rights of all Americans are also of interest. Grants in the emerging technologies field address the potential risks of nanotechnology as well as its “convergence” with other technologies. Letters of inquiry no longer than three pages are accepted at any time.
