Arthur Vining Davis Foundations
Category: General
DescriptionThe Foundation philanthropic interests include private higher education, secondary education, graduate theological education, health care, and public television. Grants for private higher education have concentrated on four-year, residential, liberal arts institutions, which place strong emphasis on teaching and whose students choose majors primarily in the arts and sciences, rather than career or vocational studies. The Foundation also funds historically Black colleges, Native American tribal colleges, colleges in Appalachia, and similar schools providing opportunities for traditionally underserved populations. Secondary education funding focuses on innovative professional development programs that strengthen teachers and their teaching in grades 9-12. Funding for graduate theological programs goes to seminaries or divinity schools known for academic excellence and whose primary mission is to prepare students for ordination to pastoral or pulpit ministry. Health care grants focus on “caring attitudes.” Preference is given to institutions or organizations with the visibility and organizational capacity to develop programs likely to be replicated nationally. Public television grants provide partial support for major series with lasting educational value that are assured of national airing by PBS.
