Founded in 1918 by Anna M. Harkness, one of the first women to start a private foundation, the Fund supports independent research on health care issues and make grants to promote better access, improved quality, and greater efficiency in health care, particularly for society's most vulnerable, including people of color, people with low income, and those who are uninsured. The Fund's grantees and staff experts focus on the health care system's most pressing issues: Achieving Universal Coverage, Controlling Health Care Costs, Advancing Health Equity, and Improving Health Care Quality.
