DescriptionNamed for the heir and former executive of the drug Company, the Fund is dedicated to protecting the natural environment and ensuring a healthy planet for generations to come. The Fund also seeks to strengthen the social fabric and the physical landscape of urban communities. Grants are awarded to nonprofits that address one of the following three program areas: Reducing CO2 Emissions through Energy Efficiency and Carbon Pricing; Conserving Ecologically Valuable Land; and Urban Faming and Youth Leadership. Reducing CO2 Emissions grants support the development of political and economic drivers at the federal and state level in the Northeast and Southeast to establish or expand carbon pricing mechanisms. Conserving Ecologically Valuable Land Program awards grants for land conservation in the Southeast United States. (The Foundation defines the Southeast as the states of Tennessee, North Carolina, Kentucky, South Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia). The Urban Farming and Youth Leadership Program supports initiatives in New York City and Philadelphia as well s low-income urban areas in Massachusetts that help young people to create urban farms and local markets.
