Description

The Foundation was created by the late pediatrician and entrepreneur, Dr. David H. Smith. Smith believed in the power of individuals and organizations to make significant changes in the world. The Foundation’s grantmaking focuses on two areas: The David H. Smith Conservation Research Fellowship Program and The Cedar Tree Foundation Grant Program. The Fellowship is a post-doctoral fellowship program which identifies and supports early career scientists working to solve real world problems. The Cedar Tree Foundation grant supports four areas of concentration: Environmental Health, Sustainable Agriculture, Children’s Environmental Health Initiative, and the Regenerative Grazing Initiatives. The latter two areas were launched in 2017. Environmental health grants support efforts to protect and empower those most vulnerable to environmental health hazards including women and children through a variety of campaigns and strategies including marketplace efforts to encourage industry to make voluntary changes to decrease exposures to toxic chemicals. Sustainable Agriculture grants support efforts to build the next generation of sustainable farmers, connect urban populations with local healthy food and agriculture, and promote market based solutions to expand the field. The Foundation also funds an Environmental Education Teacher Professional Development grant. Additional details about each of the grants and a letter of inquiry form can be found on the Web site.
