Description

The Foundation is a national, community based organization serving American Indian nations and people in the recovery and control of their rightful homelands. The Foundation works to promote education, increase cultural awareness, create economic opportunity, and reform the legal and administrative systems that prevent Indian people from owning and controlling reservation lands. The Foundation awards grants in the following areas: education, cultural awareness, economic opportunity, and legal reform. Education grants look to ameliorate the knowledge gap surrounding the history, cultural significance, and legal status of Indian lands. The Foundation’s education grants primarily focus on land history and tenure through the Lessons of Our Land Curriculum, and professional development for K-12 teachers using the curriculum. Cultural awareness grants seek to revitalize cultural and spiritual values related to Indian land. The Foundation’s cultural awareness grants support activities aimed at enhancing and maintaining cultural ties to the land. Economic opportunity grants support effective tolls and provides resources that improve Indian use and control of reservation lands for the long-term benefit of their community. Legal reform grants seek to overturn some of the most crippling systematic barriers to Indian land use and control such as fractionated ownership, checkerboarding, and abuse of the federal trust relationship. Tribal, local, or state governments as well as nonprofits are eligible to apply. Additional information can be found on the Web site.
