Description

The Organization’s mission is to create awareness and support for Native environmental issues and to develop needed financial and political resources for the survival of sustainable Native communities. The Organization’s Building Resilience in Indigenous Communities Initiative grant support nonprofit Native organizations in the United States and Canada that are controlled by indigenous peoples. Defined as how communities and societies will adapt to climate change, resilience looks toward two goals: to support and forward the development of culturally-based indigenous solutions to climate change based on re-localizing food and energy economies and to foster restoration of traditional knowledge as a key adaptation and mitigation strategy to ensure a safe and healthy future for children and the next seven generations. Grants will be awarded to organizations and projects in the following areas: implementing renewable energy and energy efficiency/weatherization improvements to advance community dignity and energy sovereignty and creating food security utilizing indigenous varieties and organic production. Additional information can be found on the Web site.
