Description

The Fund’s primary purpose is to strengthen the voice of civil society and ensure the participation of all groups in democratic practices. The Fund, established through voluntary contributions from Member States, under the authority of the Secretary General, complements current UN efforts to strengthen and expand democracy worldwide. It funds projects that enhance democratic dialogue and support for constitutional processes; civil society empowerment, including the empowerment of women; civic education and voter registration; citizen’s access to information; participation rights and the rule of law in support of a civil society, and transparency and integrity. Civil society and non-governmental organizations, independent and constitutional bodies, and global and regional inter-government bodies, organizations, and associations are eligible to apply. Preference is given to applicants from particular countries emerging from conflict, new and restored democracies, least developed countries, and low- or middle-income countries. Additional information can be found on the Web site, which opens for project proposals six weeks a year, from mid-November to the end of December.
