Description

The Foundation awards grants both to organizations serving Alaskans through a base of operations in Alaska, and to individuals for projects, fellowships, and sabbaticals. Priority is given to organizations that demonstrate strong leadership, clarity of purpose, and cautious use of resources. The Foundation funds two types of organizational grants: Tier 1 and Tier 2. Tier 1 grants of up to $25,000 fund capital projects, technology updates, capacity building, program expansion, and creative works. Tier 2 grants of more than $25,000 are awarded for large capital (building) projects; projects of demonstrable strategic importance or innovative nature; or the expansion or start-up of innovative programs that address issues of broad community or statewide significance. Large projects must demonstrate long-term benefits or impacts, and be initiative by an established organization(s) with a history of accomplishment. Applications for Tier 1 grants are accepted on an ongoing basis and funding decisions are generally made within 90 days. Letters of inquiry for Tier 2 grants are accepted year-round. Tier 2 grants are awarded during the biannual board meetings, which are generally held in early July and in early December. Additional information can be found on the Web site.
