DescriptionThe Foundation was established in 1972 by special legislation in the Japanese Diet and became an independent administrative institution in 2003. The Foundation’s mission is to promote international cultural exchange and mutual understanding between Japan and other countries. Japan Foundation New York office accepts applications for projects that take place within the 37 states east of the Rocky Mountains regardless of the location of the applicant organization. For projects held in the other 13 states, applicants are asked to contact the Japan Foundation, Los Angeles. Preference is given to projects that will further understanding of Japanese arts and culture or to produce U.S.-Japan collaborative projects through performing arts, exhibitions, film screenings, lectures, symposia, and other cultural events. Projects are chosen based on the following criteria: 1) artistic quality; 2) expected impact on the audience and the U.S. arts scene; 3) strength of educational and community activities; 4) organizational capacity to carry through with the project; and 5) capacity to provide future continuity.
