Description

The Foundations support selected nonprofits and initiatives that seek to address critical challenges to the economic health and well being of the United States. The Foundations’ primary focus is in the San Francisco Bay area. Grantmaking is targeted toward four areas: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education; environment; character and citizenship development; and preventive healthcare and selected research. STEM education grants support organizations that seek to achieve the following objectives: early engagement (K-8) in STEM learning; STEM pathways at key transition points along California’s K-14 public educational system; infrastructure development to advance STEM teaching and learning in California; and public awareness and advocacy to build demand for STEM education. Environment grants support organizations working to address water, wetlands, parks, and energy. Character and citizenship development grants support youth character development initiatives in the San Francisco Bay area; and initiatives that advance a vibrant and productive national conversation about why active citizenship matters. Preventive healthcare and selected research grants support access to health care, nutrition and fitness, and early-stage investigator research related to Alzheimer’s, aging, nutrition, or other board-determined specific research initiatives. The Foundations plan to spend down their endowments by the end of 2016. Additional information can be found on the Web site.
