Description

Named for Col. Robert McCormick, the longtime editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune newspaper, the Foundation’s mission is to advance the ideals of a free, democratic society by investing in children, communities, and country. The Foundation focuses its grantmaking on five areas: citizenship, communities, education, journalism, and special initiatives. Under citizenship, grants are made to Illinois organizations to facilitate public discussion on national issues, civic engagement initiatives, and military and veteran support systems. Community grants support basic human needs, children and youth at risk, and community strengthening offered by organizations across the United States. Education grants fund early education as it relates to public policy, quality assurance strategies, and public awareness. These grants are awarded to Illinois organizations and out-of-state nonprofits for work benefitting Illinois. Journalism grants support programs surrounding content, audiences, and rights. Emphasis is on programs around the United States with a special focus on the Chicago metropolitan area. Special initiatives grants support civic, cultural, educational, health and social service institutions in general as well as program support that includes capital and endowment campaigns primarily in the Chicago metropolitan region. A new Veterans Program honors the service of America’s veterans by supporting nonprofits that assist veterans in overcoming their unique challenges and successfully re-entering life at home and work. Grants of $5,000 to $250,000 are awarded to organizations that focus on one of five key areas relevant to veterans: mental health, family issues, shelter and homelessness, job and career development, and legal challenges. Letters of inquiry may be submitted throughout the year. Additional information is available on the Web site.
