DescriptionThe Foundation’s Pathways Out of Poverty program focuses on helping needy young people and adults in Washington, D.C., gain a quality education. The Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the late political cartoonist Herblock, whose work was found in major daily newspapers. For projects serving youth, grants will be awarded to projects that focus on improving student achievement and healthy development of young people of middle school age and above. Projects may include in-school and community-based educational programs, after-school activities, and mentoring programs. Of particular interest are programs designed to increase high school graduation rates. For projects serving adults, the Foundation seeks proposals to provide literacy education and GED preparation and to offer vocational training and job placement. Eligible organizations must be located in and/or provide services in the greater Washington, D.C. area defined as the District of Columbia, the counties of Arlington and Fairfax and the city of Alexandria in Virginia, and Montgomery and Prince George counties in Maryland.
