Avon Foundation
Category: Health
DescriptionThe Foundation’s Breast Care Fund awards grants for the development of breast cancer education and outreach activities, particularly breast health education and early detection services for underserved women. The Foundation supports programs that recruit women for both first-time and annual screenings; work with health care providers to ensure proper clinical follow-up of abnormal screening results; and educate older women (65+ years old) about Medicare coverage of annual screening mammograms. The Foundation also funds programs that assist older women in obtaining mammograms from providers who accept Medicare. Programs must utilize the three-part approach to breast cancer early detection including regular screening mammography, clinical breast examination, and monthly breast self-examination. Between January 1 and Dec. 31, 2009, the Foundation will also be awarding one-year grants to about 80 or 90 community-based programs and/or health-care agencies. To ensure that smaller community-based organizations receive funding, the Fund intends to award at least 40 percent of the grants to organizations with operating budgets under $2 million. The Fund will also award at least one grant in every state and two grants in every state where there is an Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. A list of states and additional information is available on the Web site.
