DescriptionThe Center promotes the quality of the natural environment, human health, and community sustainability. Grants are awarded to local, state, and regional organizations to increase their effectiveness. The Center focuses its grantmaking on four programs: Training and Organizational Assistance, Leadership and Enhanced Assistance, Technology Resources, and Fund-raising for Sustainable Organizations. The Training and Organizational Assistance grants help groups hire a consultant, attend a training session, or determine their needs and priorities. This program has deadlines on the first day of each month and grant amounts range from $3,500 to $5,000 annually. The Leadership and Enhanced Assistance Program (LEAP) grants helps groups “leap” forward to achieve significant internal goals. Grants in this program average $10,000. Technology Resources grants help environmental justice organizations increase the effectiveness of their communications and the efficiency of their daily operations. Eligible groups receive a customized technology assessment, hardware and software, training, and support. This program is limited to groups based in Arizona, Arkansas, Alabama, Colorado, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Utah. Groups based in Mexico that work on environmental issues, which occur on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border may also apply for funding. Grants and equipment average $5,000. The Fund-raising for Sustainable Organizations Program (FUNDS) is the Center’s newest program. It offers technical assistance, planning, and implementation grants, and loans to help organizations diversify their funding. Grants also help groups establish a solid plan and address their choice of fund-raising challenges. Organizations with budgets under $500,000 are given preference for all the grants.
