(Part-Time)

Friendly House, Inc., is a 501(c) 3 non-profit agency located in Phoenix, Arizona whose primary function is to provide a variety of educational and social service programming aimed at addressing the needs of low-income individuals and families, vulnerable populations and diverse communities. Additionally, Friendly House operates a charter school, Academia del Pueblo, with the mission to provide an academic environment which promotes a culture of high expectations to students from diverse cultures. Friendly House was organized in 1920 as the Phoenix Americanization Committee by a group of Phoenix citizens with the assistance of the United States Department of Education. In our 100-year history, the work of Friendly House has resulted in building resilient communities that are helping to spur economic development, stabilize neighborhoods and revitalize our city.

 

Position Summary

ELT Instructor is responsible for planning, organizing, implementing and teaching lessons to refugee English Language Learners (ELL’s). Instructor presents contextualized lessons on the four domains of reading, writing, listening, and speaking as well as lessons on basic digital literacy. Help students prepare for using technology in language learning. In addition, instructors include aspects of U.S. culture and civics helpful for interacting in community, workplace, and educational settings. Help administer progress assessments as necessary, maintain attendance records for students and review and analyze progress test results. Actively participate in required Professional Development (PD) sessions and trainings. In addition, the ELT Instructor assists with identifying students eligible for the program and works closely with the Refugee Programs Manager in all aspects of enrollment and registration.

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or closely related field
  • Well versed in principles and methods for curriculum design and delivery for individuals and groups
  • Knowledge of adult education programs
  • Skills to address learning needs of diverse students with limited English proficiency
  • Knowledge of technologies used in education.
  • Knowledge of computer software including Microsoft Office products, internet and electronic communication (e- mail, social networking, etc.)
  • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as managing files and records and other office procedures
  • Eligible for IVP fingerprint clearance card and Adult Education Certificate.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in education, TESOL, or related field
  • Three years related experience as a teacher, tutor, or aide in an adult education program or in grades K - 12.
  • CLAS E certification

 

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, organize, implement, and teach lessons to refugee English Language Learners (ELLs)
  • Present contextualized lessons on the four domains of reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
  • Provide information about using technology for language learning.
  • Include aspects of U.S. culture and civics helpful for interacting in community, workplace, and educational settings
  • Help administer placement and progress assessments as necessary.
  • Review and analyze progress test results.
  • Provide suggested lessons to improve student learning.
  • Recommend latest teaching methodologies to improve instruction.
  • Maintain student attendance.
  • Actively participate in required Professional Development (PD) sessions and trainings.
  • Classes may be held online or in person. Perform other duties as needed.
  • Develop lesson plans for English Language Training
  • Deliver English Language Instruction
  • Contact students as necessary.
  • Monitor student progress.
  • Maintain student attendance records.
  • Participate in professional learning and other team initiatives/projects.
  • Other duties as required.
