Business Manager Job Description

*Exempt, Full-time position, Remote

Responsible to: Executive Director

 

Description: 

The Business Manager will provide financial leadership for our dynamic nonprofit organization. The Business Manager bears responsibility for financial reporting, business procedures, ensuring compliance with laws and regulations, and managing three team members (part-time Human Resources Manager, part-time Data Manager, and full-time Administrative Coordinator).  The Business Manager works closely with a national accounting firm on payroll, invoicing, and financial reporting. Ideal candidates will have experience with Bill.com and Intacct. Areas of focus for this position during the first year of employment include auditing our current business policies and processes in order to ensure alignment between fiscal operations and strategic priorities; analyzing our data landscape through a business lens; and determining how to best leverage reporting and planning functionality in our existing financial systems. Ideal candidates are passionate about upholding best practices in social sector business management and continuous improvement. Job Responsibilities Include:

 

Core

  • Manage Educopia’s financial operations, including purchasing, accounting, and reporting
  • Work closely with Executive Director and Treasurer to track/monitor organizational expenses, ensuring the organization meets all targets and stays within budget
  • Supervise 1 full time equivalent (FTE) Administrative Coordinator, .5 Human Resources & Administrative Manager, and .5 FTE Data and Communications Manager
  • Facilitate and manage budget and reporting processes at the organizational level, and also for each of Educopia’s Affiliated Communities and projects
  • Maintain successful working relationships with members, clients, administrators, funders, consultants, and other stakeholders involved in Educopia’s business operations
  • Ensure fiscal compliance with state and federal laws and regulations, as well specific funder guidelines
  • Assist in the preparation of external reports, including tax returns (e.g., gathers Board information, funder information, generates reports on revenue, checking for accuracy, etc.)
  • Provide financial consultation to Affiliated Community treasurers and facilitators as well as project leads
  • Prepare and oversee payroll processing in coordination with an accounting firm

 

Additional Areas of Focus:

  • Continuously improve operations, decrease turnaround times, and streamline work processes across Educopia
  • Develop projections and reports that help to increase transparency around fiscal and strategic business goals and practices
  • Develop a process for annual policy review (i.e., insurance policies) and implement necessary updates.
  • Support staff, senior leadership, and board in fundraising efforts via grants and consulting
  • Co-lead organizational evaluation, program review and planning processes alongside Executive Director, Deputy Director, and Program Manager

 

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of related experience within the nonprofit sector
  • Masters degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance or related field OR Bachelors degree and more than 3 years of experience in an accounting or financial management role
  • Demonstrated background and experience in financial management, compliance, and business development
  • Experience using accounting and grant management software and platforms (e.g., Quickbooks, Intaact, Fluxx, Bill.com, egms)
  • Demonstrated success planning, developing, and controlling budgets
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Consistent high level of integrity and ethics – both personally and professionally
  • Commitment to the personal and professional work of acknowledging systems and modes of interaction that have caused harm, predicting potential future harms of our practices and approaches, and proactively shifting those practices and approaches in order to cultivate trust and mutual respect among staff, clients, and partners.

Compensation, Development, and Application

Salary range is $65,000 - $75,000/year, commensurate with experience, with additional funding for professional development and travel. Benefits include 24 vacation days per year (accruing monthly) and 10 paid holidays, as well as insurance options and retirement match options. The person hired in this role will also be provided with a computer stipend to set up their remote workspace.
