Description

The Foundation’s Democracy Grant Program works with Chicago-based communities as well as those across the state of Illinois to develop educated, informed, and engaged citizens, with the ultimate aim of assisting communities, strengthening democracy, and helping ensure that all families and children in the city and state have the opportunities they need to flourish. The Program seeks to strengthen democracy in Illinois through projects and initiatives that inform and engage citizens and communities, promote vigorous and independent journalism, and create more responsive systems of government. Grants are awarded to organizations impacting the City of Chicago and/or one of the seven counties of northeastern Illinois in the following areas: Strengthen Local Journalism, Engage Youth Civically, and Invigorate Public Institutions. Journalism programs should be vigorous, independent, and effective at informing the public and holding institutions accountable. Youth Civic programs should focus on informing youth, having them actively participating in their communities, and ensuring they have a healthy civic disposition. Public Institution programs should support institutions that are inclusive, transparent, and accountable to the communities they serve. Additional information can be found on the Web site.
