Description

This private Foundation is dedicated to creating a sustainable environment, a strong democracy, and a peaceful world. The Foundation awards grants to organizations that work to promote ecological sustainability, protect the public’s interest in media systems, and to reduce the risks and costs of war. Environmental grants are divided into two areas. Grants to Maryland organizations focus on statewide environmental advocacy and programs that promote ecologically sustainable practices and policies on the Eastern Shore. National grants seek to strengthen the environmental movement and support programs and organizations working to reduce the pressure on forests from the paper products industry. Media policy grants protect the public’s interest in the national media system by supporting, organizing, public education, and administrative advocacy. Promoting peace grants address two areas: promoting a richer and more well-informed public debate about national security policy, especially as its reflected in federal budget priorities and reducing the risks posed by nuclear and chemical weapons by promoting the elimination of nuclear weapons. The Foundation believes that good philanthropic citizenship requires reliability and accountability; that transparency enables reliability; that accountability engenders humility; and that respect and humility foster responsiveness. Additional information is available on the Web site. Letters of inquiry are required.
