Description
Understanding standard financial statements is critical to the
success of nonprofit organizations. This course de-mystifies both
accrual and cash accounting practices and focuses on developing healthy
financial practices.
Learners will understand how to read financial statements and how to
interpret them, including: balance sheets, auditor management letter,
assets and liabilities. Easy to follow and filled with helpful tools,
this is a must for both board members and staff.

THOMAS A MCLAUGHLIN
Senior Manager, Not-For-Profit Practice
Grant Thornton LLP, Boston, MA
Tom is a noted consultant, lecturer and author in the field
of not-for-profit management, and a senior manager in the
not-for-profit practice of Grant Thornton LLP . McLaughlin, who
has more than 30 years of experience in not-for-profit and trade
association management.
He teaches graduate courses in strategic planning and financial
management at Boston University and Brandeis University. He is
the author of numerous articles and several books, including
“Trade Secrets for Nonprofit Managers” (2001, John Wiley & Sons,
New York City), and lectures throughout the country on the
subject of nonprofit management.
McLaughlin is currently a board member of the Massachusetts
Council of Human Service Providers in Boston, where he also
served as associate director from 1984 to 1990. He was director
of contract administration at the Northeastern Family Institute
in Danvers, Mass., from 1979 to 1984 and was director of the
Newton-Wellesley-Weston Committee, a non-profit mental
retardation services corporation in Newton, Mass., from 1977 to
1979.
He was selected as the first Nonprofit Scholar in Residence at
the Isenberg School of Management at the University of
Massachusetts, Amherst, in 1999. McLaughlin earned a bachelor
of arts degree, a master of urban affairs degree and an MBA from
Boston University. |
